Getting here:
A good concentration of interesting ocean rock formations can be viewed between Teluk Pandan Kecil and Teluk Paku. Local boats can be hired from the Park Headquarters and the boat journey will take anywhere between 30-45 minutes.

Description:
Bako National Park and unique rock formations go hand in hand. It is safe to say that the interesting geological attributes along the coastline are the main highlights of Bako National Park. As the uniquely-shaped rocks were carved by the ravaging ocean waves of South China Sea, the best method to view them is by hiring a local boat from Telok Assam where the Park Headquarters is located.

I got the chance to enjoy the unique sights by hiring a boat from Teluk Pandan Kecil that passes along Tanjung Batu Belah and Teluk Paku before landing at Telok Assam. Tanjung Batu Belah is particularly filled with a high concentration of sea rock formations that are geological marvels by themselves. If you are lucky, the boatman will be chatty enough to describe certain rock formations that you are passing through. As for me, the boatman described certain rocks to appear in resemblance of either a tortoise's head, a lion's head that uncanningly similar to the Sphinx of Egypt, male and woman facial figurines on opposite boulder ends, and probably other unworldly forms that got lost in translation.

Perhaps there are even local tales on each of the interesting rock formation that resembles a certain figurine, be it a villain that was cursed to be a rock, or the poignant love tales of a woman and a man, etc. Each rock tells a different story mythically and geologically.

To me, the boat excursion should not be missed as it surely beats negotiating the many trails of Bako National Park. It is a relaxing ocean journey where you can sit back while enjoying the unique views.
